Their story began in Colorado in 2007, at a little venue called Cricket on the Hill, where Tempa and her band had been hosting a regular jam session. The locals called it the “Tempa Jam” or the “Tantrums Jam.”
That’s where they met for the first time.
They came from different worlds. Tempa had spent years singing the blues, soul and roots music that shaped her voice. A performer, singer-songwriter and poet, her love of words and storytelling has always been woven into her music. Naor grew up in Israel, with a guitar in his hands and a love for music that crossed cultures and borders.
Somewhere between the songs, they found each other.
What started as a musical connection became a friendship, a love story, and eventually a life spent writing songs and making music together.
When they made Maui their home in 2012, they brought all those influences with them. Soul, folk, Americana, blues, a little Middle Eastern flavor, and the belief that music has a way of bringing people together when words alone aren't enough.
Over the years, their musical world has grown in all sorts of directions. They've written and recorded original songs, released albums, created bands, shared stages with incredible musicians, and brought their music to intimate listening rooms and larger stages.
Along the way, they've been fortunate to be part of some wonderful moments—from Maui's songwriting community and the Maui Songwriters Festival to sold-out performances at ProArts and the joyful, sometimes wonderfully chaotic world of Soul Kitchen.
But some of their favorite moments are still the simplest ones.
A new song taking shape in their studio. A line of poetry finding its way into a melody. A harmony they didn't expect. A room full of people singing along. Or that beautiful silence after a song when everyone seems to be feeling the same thing.
Tempa brings the words, poetry and stories, along with a voice shaped by a lifetime of music. Naor builds musical landscapes with guitars, ukulele, looping, voice and whatever else the song seems to need. Somewhere in the middle, their songs find their way home.
They call it their Music Medicine.
Not because music fixes everything, but because they've experienced how it can help people feel, remember, heal, laugh, cry and find one another.
And after all these years, they're still writing, learning, exploring, and discovering where the next song might take them.
And the music continues.
